Final Project!!

C l o u d s

For the final project, Katie Mac and I teamed up to take on a project that would be completely different from all the others presented in class. Our idea was to take photos of clouds, print them, and mount them on the ceiling in the LA building. The orginal plan was to add time stamps to the photos in order to show the passing of time. But we hit a few snags along the way, and adjustments had to be made. So instead, we decided to focus the project on just the clouds themselves.

Printing the pictures.....
We had originally planned to cover the whole ceiling at first. But one of the snags we hit was time, each print took about 10-15 minutes to print, which meant we needed more time. Another issue was money, each sheet of paper cost $5. After all that, we decided to only do 25 large prints of 17x22 so that they photos would be big enough to see, and we could still cover a decent section of the ceiling. We also added a white boarder to each picture. The reason for this is because each picture is a different image, and we didn't want to try and "blend" them together because it wouldn't have matched. We wanted each picture to have its own identity in the piece.

Letting them "dry"

After we took the prints out of the printer, we had to let them sit and "dry" for 15 minutes. We also labeled each photo and gave it a name based on the shapes we saw in the clouds. Some on the names include: Mountain, Beak, Smile, Turtle, and Bow-tie just to name a few.

In order to install the pictures, I brought a ladder to school that we could use. Rather than pinning each photo, we taped two photos together at once, so we had more stability and used less pins in the ceiling tiles. This took about two hours or so to complete.

I love our project! Even though it didn't turn out the way we had originally planned, I think the concept was successful. As each of our days pass on, most of us never stop to really look up and enjoy the view.

Our "no shit" sign. It is what it is! We like to keep it simple.

Artist Spotlight: Joy Garnett

Joy Garnett

Joy's works include a variet of disaster scenes, from crazy weather conditions, to houses on fire. Her most famous work is probably the Molotov Man. But all of her works have the same, almost blurry feel to them. I think it adds a bit of movement to the work, which I actually enjoy that type of style in general. It reminds me a lot of Degas' style. Overall, very interesting scenes of destruction and chaos.
